SIXTEEN
FINGER BONES AND A PLATINUM MONSTROSITY
Jem found it impossible to get much sense out of Georgia over the phone, so she insisted they meet up in Hugh Town. It fitted into the plans she and Pauley had already agreed upon, and made her feel like she was helping the grieving widow in some way.
âSheâs really latched onto you,â Pauley said. âI wonder why?â
Jem shrugged. Obviously, Georgia would have done better to consult Hack, or DS Conrad of Devon & Cornwall, or a licensed psychotherapist.
âMaybe itâs that good old âLibrary Worldâ connection,â she said. âIf I were just any islander who solved a murder case, Georgia might be afraid to ask. But people who gravitate toward library work are used to reaching out to each other. Doesnât matter where you stand in the ecosystem,â she added, meaning whether one worked as a volunteer, page, assistant, librarian, or manager. âPreserving knowledge is a monumental task that goes back centuries. Itâs always been a team effort, and it always will be.â
Because they planned to drop in on Vera Vet while in Hugh Town, it was necessary to take Buck along. Because dropping in on Roddy Levitt at his Penzance gallery was also on the table, Jem decided it would be far more practical, not to mention economical, to make the trip on Bellatrix. All they had to do was suit up, snap Buckâs lead onto his red leather collar, and follow the Byway down to St. Morwenna Quay, where Jemâs boat was moored not far from shore.
âI wonder if we should try and fit Buck into a dry bag,â Jem said.
âDonât be ridiculous. Heâs a tough little doggie. Born to swim, arenât you, my lad?â Pauley inquired of Buck, who wagged his tail fiercely in reply.
âHold onto him. We can wade at first, but weâll probably have to swim the last few feet,â Jem said, glancing around the quay for any passing fisherman or pleasure boater who might give two gals and a mutt a lift out to Bellatrix.
âWeâll be fine. When Buck doesnât want to do something, he bolts. And when he canât bolt, he whines. Look at him,â Pauley said, smiling fondly at the dog. âIâll bet he thinks Rhys is across the water and waiting for him on board.â
âIf only,â Jem said unthinkingly. Realizing how it sounded, she added, âFor Buckâs sake. We really wonât be stretching the truth too much with Vera Vet. I just hope he manages to look at least slightly downcast while being examined.â
True to Pauleyâs prediction, Buck was an enthusiastic, fearless swimmer, his paws churning rapidly in the clear, gentle water. To Jem, it felt summery-warm, though she knew most emmets wouldnât dare put more than a toe in. In no time, she and Pauley were aboard Bellatrix, and Buck was roaming happily across the deck, sniffing at gear and barking at seagulls.
âYouâre meant to be a depressed doggie,â Jem said, slipping on her orange life vest. âThis is frolicking. Outright, conspicuous frolicking.â
âWeâre meeting poor Georgia before we go see Vera,â Pauley reminded her.
